Hello everyone! My name is Julie and I am the mastermind behind what is random434. I started in Wisconsin back in 2003 upcycling purses and scarves and selling them at art shows. When I moved to Apex, North Carolina in 2009, I brought all the furniture from my original workshop and created a new workspace Historic Downtown Apex above the coffee shop. At first, I was under the name “Make It Your Own Boutique” where I created handbags and scarves out of different pieces of clothing and fabrics.
On August 7, 2015, I was thinking a lot about upcycling clothing and I wanted to grow my business and create a new brand, but I wasn’t sure what to call it. I frequent thrift shops where I purchase good quality pieces that spark new ideas. As I fell asleep that night, the word random came to me, and that’s where the “random” part of my new brand name came into play. At 4:34 AM, I jumped out of bed and started writing about my new brand and everything I wanted for my business, and that’s where I came up with “random434”. I bought my new domain name and chose a rusty brown font with a beige colored background and had my new logo made. I knew I wanted my husband to make me an outdoor sign made out of old fence pieces, and an old chair hung on the wall would serve as a shelf for purses and scarves. I chose plumbing parts to be made into racks and shelves on the walls. I call that night a creative explosion, I was just flowing with ideas. The following weekend I went thrifting and I bought lots of clothing that I could convert into fresh, one of a kind, new pieces. Everything I bought and created in those two days sold before my husband and I could even finish constructing my new store. My customers appreciate that I can turn something boring into something unique and one of a kind not found at other stores.
